The Gap

A coach works on your performance. A therapist works on your past.
The thing keeping you stuck usually sits between them, which is why neither one reaches it.

Most people who reach me have understood their situation for years.

They can name the pattern, say when it started, point to the decision they keep not making.

The understanding is precise, but nothing has been resolved.

At some point another insight stops being medicine. It is a better-lit view of the same prison.

The reason it does not move is that something underneath is holding it in place.

 

A belief that was never questioned, running below your awareness, deciding how the whole thing looks from where you stand.

More thinking does not get to it. The thinking is what protects it.

I find that belief and name it plainly, and stay with it until it cannot keep running where you cannot see it.

 

I add nothing. I refuse to.

Everyone in your life already adds something.

I take away the things that have been silently deciding everything, and what is left was already yours.

This happens in two forms

THE CUT

One conversation.

When there is one thing.
A decision, pattern, or belief you are stuck on and cannot move, however clearly you are able to see it.

THE YEAR

Twelve months.

When it is not one thing.
When what's slowing you down is not one belief but a whole set of them woven into each other.

The work only makes sense when something is already at stake.
